I booked my last studio session with Laiara before the Winter break, where I set up the SM58 for her vocals and she wanted to test out the Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, so I thought to mic up the guitar amp and hear how that sounded. Similarly to my other studio sessions, I asked about recommended microphones for the guitar amp, where I was given the R121 and SM57. These two microphones are commonly used together to record the guitar amp, and there is even a microphone clip essentially for the setup of these microphones, which I utilised, since knowing that it is commonly used, I thought it would be effective when capturing the sound from the guitar amp.
Since Laiara was to play the guitar at the same time of singing, I set up the SM58 for her as she was sat on a stool to be able to play the Strat as well. This was another testing microphones project, where I just pressed record on an empty Logic project and she did whatever she wanted as I played with the levels of each microphone and the levels on the guitar amp.
Here is a video of how I set up the microphones:
I booked out Studio 1 this time, since my usual studio that I booked (Studio 2) was taken, and found there were some technical issues with the headphones that doesn’t usually happen in Studio 2, where there was audible delay, making it difficult for Laiara to record in time, in addition to the drums in Studio 1 making it difficult to record the guitar amp without the drums bleeding into the recording. Therefore, when doing the “real” recordings, I will prefer to book out Studio 2.
With all these microphones that I have tested in the studio, I will have to ask and make sure that these are suitable for recording live music. For future studio sessions in the next Block of uni, I will need to get Laiara’s drummer to come into the studio to test out the setup of microphones, since the drums seem to be the most hassle to mic up, since having different microphones pointing at the different parts of the drum kit.
