20. ORGANISATION AND THINGS I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY

  • During the whole process, I am glad that I have been on top of writing constant notes and updating my notes on what I have done and what I wish to do for future studio sessions
  • Though, my notes were a bit all over the place – some on my laptop, some on my phone and some physically written in my notebook, especially when mixed with my notes for my other units for uni
  • By the end, I compiled the most important things on my iPad, all on there so that I can easily look for what I need – it is also helpful when I need to draw something out, that is hard to do on my computer or my phone

Notes I took throughout the process:

  • A huge issue I found was that the artist I was working with wasn’t very on top of her music since she had her own uni work to do and I think I didn’t push hard enough as the person in charge of the whole project
  • In addition, there were things that I had asked from her to prepare before rehearsals so that it would make things easier for the band and herself and that would save time, such as having all the lyrics and chords printed out with all notes for how she wanted each of the instruments to play, however she only did this for the recording day
  • What I learnt from this project is to take charge when it is you project – for example, when changing my idea from the Darkroom Bar to the room M108, the artist wasn’t too happy of the change and didn’t understand that my project only requires for a live recording and an audience is not required – I am glad I stuck to my decision, since having an audience and holding this kind of even in the Darkroom Bar would have been a lot more difficult to carry out, especially since it was already difficult when holding the even in M108
  • In addition, gathering a band could have been dealt with a lot quicker, however the artist was very uncertain about what instruments she wanted, who she wanted to have in the band
  • A very big part of this project that caused a huge delay was the music being unfinished and the artist not knowing how she even wants the band to play – she kept asking Nico and Justin about their opinions, and she would have to think about it for a while to make a decision on how she wanted everything to sound
  • Therefore, as the organiser of this whole event, I could have been a lot sterner with the artist and what I wanted to be done by a certain time
  • From this, communication and teamwork are major aspects when dealing with these sorts of events

  • Alongside this, from the performing side, I found that since there was a lack of practice between the band, and they were still getting to know each other, it was hard for them to get along musically unlike it would for a band that has practiced more together
  • This can also be due to the fact that the music was not finished either, and they were still figuring out how to play certain bits of the song – for some of the rehearsals, it was the musician’s first time hearing these songs, which was not ideal, and I knew this from the start, however, similarly again, I did not push enough for the artist to get even just the demos for the band for them to understand the songs in advance
  • After organising and producing this performance, I now know what areas are key to have planned in advance and what is needed from me as a leader and my team for everything to go smoothly
