Before recording everything, I needed to check the signals for each of the instruments, having each musician play something for me to make sure it was going through the desk and onto Logic Pro
In addition, I saw the cover that the band did as a sound check for me to actively check the signals of everything playing together at once
We were able to go through all the songs once and record all of what we wanted, however not everything was to the best of their ability and they weren’t completely happy with their performance because of small mistakes:
Rex forgot the beginning solo for ‘token’
and for the song ‘protect our peace’, the drummer started to play slower more towards the end, making it difficult for the vocalist to sing and control her breath for that song
There were more technical issues, which took up most of our time, which took more time to sort out because I was the only one having to sort this out
There was an issue with the signal again with the headphones during the performance, which I was not aware of because my headphones were connected straight to the desk, and I had to be informed by the vocalist to tell me that they could not hear anything at all from the headphones
The headphone amp was somehow getting signal into the 8th input, when it should have been input 1, but after talking to the technician, they told me that it was to do with the company that wired that patch bay, so there wasn’t anything I could really do about that, so had to go with the 8th input
However, when this issue of the signal being cut completely happened, I firstly changed the TRS cable again to see if it were something to do with the cable, but the signal was still cut, therefore I chose to try and bring back the signal through the patch bay, which ended up working thankfully
We were cutting close on time, since a lot of the band needed to leave at a certain time, therefore, the band were only able to record each song once – which they weren’t entirely happy with, since making mistakes
Luckily, although most people had to leave early, packing up is always much faster than setting up, though since Justin had to leave early and with me being the only one understanding how to coil the wires and pack everything up properly, I had to redo some of the wires and headphones to pack up
In addition, because some people didn’t know that some of the microphones had come with a mount, and when I was putting all the microphones back into their designated pouches, I had to look around and search for the small mounts that came with each mic that was used for the performance
