REH ON APRIL 23RD
- This was our longest rehearsal that was held in the uni studio that I booked from 2-8pm
- Everyone in the band came on this day, but Tomas and Rex came a bit later
- A tech run was suggested by the technicians, where I would mic up the instruments, treating it as if it were the recording day, having all the equipment that I requested , since all the mics that I am planning to use for recording day is available in those studios in W107
- Since I was the only person there who could set up, setting up the microphones for each instrument took me around an hour and a half, and having some of the musicians arriving later than schedule, practice didn’t really start until around 4pm
- Since being a tech run, I wired all the instruments as I would in the actual recording
- For this rehearsal, since the mics were set up, I was in the control room
- This was incredibly helpful and made me more confident for the recording day
- Me being in the control room was actually helpful whilst performing, since the live room is quite small and there were a lot of cables everywhere, it would have been difficult for me to move around the room – saved space
- I was given masking tape and a marker to tape onto the physical channel strips of the desk so it was a lot easier to see what was for what instrument rather than having to look at the top of the channel strip to see its number, then checking on my channel list on my iPad to check what instrument it is for
- The band went through the newest songs more, and it was even some of the musicians’ first time hearing these songs – not idea, but ended up this way
- I took pictures of the microphone placements for the drum kick, snare, overheads, guitar amp and saxophone for reference for my tech team to make set up easier
The technicians mentioned that as I practice, I can figure out if I need more equipment or not – since the live room is a lot smaller than the room I want to record in (M108), if I need more XLRs, then I would have to take this into account and ask for more to be used on recording day, since this is a much bigger room, therefore needing to plug XLRs into one another to extend them
After this rehearsal, I found that set up would be a lot faster and easier with a team, so I am hoping that my tech team that I have chosen will be able to make this set up work out. Also, during this rehearsal, there was a faulty headphone – had to get another one to replace that, indicating a technical issue, that I have to be aware of for recording day, since anything technical could go wrong and I would have to act fast in fixing these issues.
