I was first introduced to foley when given this task, which is where sounds are creating from doing someone else than what is actually shown in the video with objects that would be more accessible and obtainable. For example, we got Nico to crunch on/eat pineapple, Ben to snap/twist celery for the snapping sound since we can’t get someone to actually bite off someone’s arm, as the zombie does in this video, so we had to try to think about the crunch sound, the texture of the skin, the blood and how to bring the video to life and believable. These items were chosen specifically – the pineapple was to emphasise the through its liquid of the pineapple, as well as the actual bite, but to make the crunch sound more like flesh being munch on, the celery was chosen for the snapping sound. Instead of Ableton, Pro Tools was used for this video where everything was recorded ourselves as a group using the foley studio, and then each recording best fitting to the video and situation was layered on top of each other to create this end product. With the number of objects we had to gather for one crunch of this video, I have realised how much time it would take to do foley for an entire film. And since this was my time recording foley, I wasn’t quite certain about the objects we could use for these types of videos – I wouldn’t have thought of using food to record.
