FOLEY: FOREST

Similarly to the zombie video, we were to record more foley, however with a different video that is more realistic and easier to think about what items to gather to record on top of the video. This next video is a man who seems to be walking in the forest. The things we took note of was what he was wearing – boots as shoes, type of trousers and jacket he was wearing as well as the weight of the backpack that he had on his back. Because we could record the sounds by doing things similar to what the person is doing in the video, as a group, we agreed on bringing leaves from outside as well as twigs. With these, we used the foley trap, which was a hole inside of the recording foley studio, where we could place the leaves and twigs for someone to walk on to imitate what was happening in the video. Since he was wearing boots, I walked on the leaves to be recorded since I was wearing boots as well, which would create similar sound as the video. To record, there was a screen in the recording booth for me to watch to be able to try and walk at the same time as the person in the video by imitating his same steps. We also recorded the movement of the backpack with someone’s bag that looked as if it weighed the same as in the video, having Justin move the bag as we would assume the backpack in the video would be moving as well. This was also recorded with Pro Tools. I think that the hard part was being in time with the video, so we would have to record a few takes to get the right one that matches with the video. Since recording with the video playing, it is important that there is no delay in the DAW between the recording and the video, even though you could shift the recording, but having the exact same timing between the two makes the process easier and quicker.
